Hitting the Road

What’s so great about living, writing, and traveling in a Class A recreational vehicle? They’re large lumbering beasts, hard to control, impossible to maneuver in cities, and they guzzle gas.

The answer has been many miles in the making. A decade ago, I fell in love with the idea of living simply, letting go of “stuff” and downsizing into a tiny home. At the time, tiny homes were just beginning to make a splash. The ones I saw were absolutely adorable. I mooned over them one time too many and before I knew it, my new husband was looking at recreational vehicles. Wait! What? It’s quite a leap from a tiny home (in my imagination a lovely miniature Victorian settled on a plot of land) to a rumbling rolling house on wheels.

“We can travel,” he said. “We can have a different view every day!”

Okay. I’m a sucker for a beautiful view outside my window. I like visiting new places, and I’m lucky enough to live in the Pacific Northwest where stunning views are just a few miles away. Mountains? Check. Waterfalls? Check. Desert? Check. Deepest lake in the country (Crater Lake)? Check. The mighty ever-changing Pacific Ocean? Double check!

Since that time, we’ve crisscrossed the country more than once, taking different routes each time. We’ve been up and down the Pacific Coast multiple times as well. We’ve stayed put for months in places we loved and worked as park hosts. We did all of this while also juggling jobs and my writing life. It’s been an adventure and I hope it continues, because our travels have now become fodder for my cozy mysteries.

If you’re ready to travel with Aunt Saffi—the heroine of my brand-new Pacific Northwest Cozy Mystery series—you’ll discover the wonders and woes of life on six wheels. Buckle up, and welcome to the journey! I hope you enjoy the ride.
